Some venues you visit once and forget about by the following week – but Pewsey’s Chalk Barn is not one of them. Set among organic farmland that stretches further than you’d think possible, the barn itself pulls off that tricky balance between rustic charm and proper modern comfort, all bathed in natural light that makes everything inside feel that bit more magical.
We got to see it for ourselves recently when Hog Roast Pewsey was booked in for a wedding here, and honestly, photos don’t quite do the place justice. Huge windows letting the light pour in, warm wood tones everywhere you look, and once the sun starts dipping and the soft lighting kicks in, the whole space gives off a dreamy, romantic vibe – we felt lucky just to see it in person, never mind getting the chance to cook here.
On this occasion, Hog Roast Pewsey had been hired to create a show-stopping wedding spread – which is always a big responsibility – for sixty guests, and the couple were trusting us to get everything perfect. They’d gone for something classic, a traditional hog roast as the centrepiece, which turned heads the moment guests walked past the buffet table.
There’s a real skill to getting a hog roast just right, which includes honouring tradition while still using methods that make sense today, and, as always, our team nailed it. People swarmed the serving table and eagerly piled soft, succulent meat onto their plates alongside stuffing, applesauce and crackling – though not before they’d worked through the canapés first, which, if we’re honest, looked almost too nice to actually eat. Almost.
Sides-wise, we kept things simple but well-presented. Tomato and mozzarella salad, coleslaw and a mixed salad, were all served up in wooden bowls that suited the whole aesthetic perfectly. A potato dish sat alongside for a bit of extra heartiness, and we’d put together a proper meat-free option too – one that had the veggie and vegan guests going back for more rather than settling for whatever was left.
Between the gorgeous setting and Hog Roast Pewsey’s standout food service, everything about this day went off without a hitch, leaving the happy couple with nothing but wonderful memories to carry with them for a lifetime.
