If there’s one thing we love at Hog Roast Bridgwater, it’s being part of life’s big moments – and this one was extra special. We were asked to cater a surprise 80th birthday for a lovely gentleman called Gordon, and honestly, we couldn’t say “yes” fast enough. There’s just something about birthdays that makes everyone smile (and maybe cry a little too – in the good way!).
The celebration took place at Withymans, a dreamy Georgian farmhouse tucked away in a sleepy Somerset hamlet. Think peaceful countryside views, comfy old-world charm, and even a hot tub out back. We didn’t hop in, promise. But we did think about it once or twice.
When we arrived, the excitement was contagious. Fourteen guests had travelled to be there – and a few even came all the way from Australia! You could tell straight away how much Gordon means to everyone. The whole place was buzzing as everyone whispered, giggled, and tried not to ruin the big surprise.
Now, let’s talk about the main event (well, second to Gordon): the food. The family chose Hog Roast Bridgwater’s Southern Slow Roast Menu, which is basically comfort food heaven. We served up BBQ pork butt, melt-in-your-mouth Texan beef brisket, and Cajun-spiced roasted chicken – all cooked low and slow until they were tender enough to melt in your mouth. Then we added our signature sauces: smoky-sweet BBQ, hickory bourbon (a crowd favourite), and a fiery Cajun pepper sauce for the brave ones.
And because we don’t believe anyone should miss out, our veggie and vegan guests got colourful grilled veg and halloumi kebabs, served with warm flatbreads and a creamy tzatziki dip. The sides? Oh, just our homemade Greek salad, glazed seasonal veggies, and crispy roasted new potatoes. Let’s just say, no one left hungry.
The party was a total hit – lots of laughter, plenty of seconds, and one very happy birthday boy. Gordon couldn’t stop smiling, and honestly, neither could Hog Roast Bridgwater. Here’s to 80 wonderful years and the kind of family that makes every milestone feel like magic.
